Kylie In the Style of Irving Penn
This shoot was inspired by Irving Penn. In particular, his work with Jean Patchett. As you guys know I’m a huge fan of black and white photography. My favorite type of black and white photography is high contrast black and white photography. That’s why I started my own series that I called the High Contrast Black and White Series. I know, it’s very creative.
Irving Penn did a lot of work with Vogue back in the day. You can see his work at the Irving Penn Foundation. I’ll put a link here. I highly recommend that you guys go check out his work because he does a lot more than just black and white and he was quite a pioneer for his time.
Back in early 2024 I got a message from Kylie on Instagram asking me if I was free to shoot. Kylie is one of those people who are super friendly and creative. So, when I got the message from her, I knew I was going to end up working with her even if I had to make time. She had some ideas of her own for the shoot and she sent those over to me. I was really excited. One of the things about Kylie that I really like is she has a fantastic sense of style. At the time I’d been working on my high contrast black and white series so I thought that it might be a good opportunity to take her ideas and pair them with that style of lighting.
On the day of the shoot when she came out in her first look I knew the photos were going to be great and after seeing the photos pop up on the screen because I’m shooting tethered I can see them as they occur I was stoked. I remember looking at the photos as they popped up on the screen and thinking god damn these are fantastic. The second look that she had was even better than the first in my opinion. The knee high leather boots paired with the hat and the body suit and then that little shoulder sweater is something I never would have come up with, but it worked so well. I ended up loving these photos so much that I used one of the images from this shoot as a T-shirt for myself which I still love to wear today.
I’m not sure when I’ll stop doing the high contrast black and white series because I love it so much. I’m sure one day I’ll have to end it. Today is not that day. If you’d like to do a high contrast black and white shoot with me go ahead and reach out I would love to add more to my series.
