AI Inspired This Shoot
I came across an AI image while scrolling through Instagram that I absolutely loved. It had soft light and gigantic moths on the models face. I found that there were a series of images like that and they really struck me. But, they sparked an internal conflict. On one hand, I don’t like the ethics of AI imagery. On the other hand, art is supposed to make you feel something and these images certainly did that. They also inspired me to try something. The inspiration was a “conflict of ideas”. Still life meets figure study, living meets the dead, real meets artificial.
The avatars of conflict:
Still life: The Flowers
Figure Study: The Model
Life: The Model
Death: The real butterflies
Real: The Model and The Butterflies
Artificial: The Flowers and the Background
I found the flowers and butterflies on amazon and the backdrop was one I had already hand painted a few years ago. Emelia is someone I have been working with for years and I knew that she had very expressive eyes. We had already been talking about shooting together again and immediately thought she would be perfect for this concept. She also tends to be very lean and I thought that her visible muscles would be really valuable to the overall concept.
In the end, my images look nothing like the inspiration. The light is different, the color grading is different, and the fact that the images weren’t AI certainly made a difference. But I cannot deny that the original spark, came from an artificial intelligence. I don’t know what the future holds for art. I do know that nothing in life stays the same. I only hope that the good outweighs the bad in the end.
Below are the results of our shoot. I hope you love them as much as I do.
